Teaching and Learning Technology Programme Project 86

Facilitated Network Learning in Medicine and Health Sciences

This questionnaire is intended to explore your current use of and attitudes to the use of communications and information technology (C&IT) in learning, teaching and administration. These results, along with other information such as departmental ‘statistics’ and student timetables, will be used as a general base-level against which uptake of the NLE may be estimated.

    5 no

  6. If yes, please name the CAL titles that you use.

    Neuromuscular Physiology ??
Pharmacal Packages and several others e.g. from Elsiver
    Sequence H
    DIY Glycolysis
    Immunoassay
    Subcellular Fractionation
    Introductory Genetics
    Mapping
    Twinspan Decorona
    Light Microscopy
    Plant Anatomy

  7. If yes, did you actively search for CAL on these title topics?

    3 searched specifically
    2 searched generally
    5 didn’t search
    2 no answers

  8. Have you identified interactive teaching materials which you would like to make use of, but are unable to either because of prohibitive cost or incompatibilities?

    4 yes
    8 no

  9. Would you like to make the following available to students to download:

    11 handouts
    11 presentations/OHPs
    7 images/35mm slides
    3 videos
    1 none
    1 other: 'practical schedules/MCQs'

  10. Do you think that you would change the content of handouts, OHPs etc if they became available for students to access over the network?

    8 Yes
    1 Yes/maybe
    1 No
    2 no answers

  11. Are you content with the amount of C&IT you make use of in your teaching?

    1 yes
    11 no

  12. Do you see the use of C&IT encouraging students to be:

    0 lazy
    0 intimidated
    6 more proactive about learning
    8 better information handlers
2 other (please state): 'independent', 'more informed ?!', 'All may apply — depends on many factors'

  13. Greater use of C&IT in the curriculum will save time for:

    0 students

    6 none

Any other comments?

Only useful as a part of an integrated package
At present I do little more than make texts available on disk for students
Jury is out on this

Teaching and Learning Technology Programme Project 86

Facilitated Network Learning in Medicine and Health Sciences

We would be very grateful if you would record you reactions to today's demonstration below. Your response will help us improve the system. Thank you very much for coming along today and for giving us this feedback.

11 questionnaires completed:

  1. As a result of today's seminar, will you be exploring with your Head of Dept / School taking part in our pilot exercise?

    10 yes
    0 no
    1 no answer

  2. What are your reasons?

    Time-saving
System will generate lots of useful info re admin, that I would use frequently
Increase student-based learning and efficiency of information transfer
To enhance efficiency, quality and success of our courses
Possibly but time is likely to be extremely limiting
It would benefit the students I teach
It will improve our staff-student communication
I have some responsibility for Durham’s involvement in the project!!!
I believe teaching resources on the Web will ultimately be more efficient for delivery
    More efficient teaching

  3. I think we would want to be involved particularly in the area of:

    Developing teaching resources
    Communicating with students
    Student progression — student records
Student management / re tutor groups, E-Mail list, assess records, feedback?
Uploading lecture-based material and associated links
    Biomedical Sciences (for me pharmacology/Neuroscience)
Database (WWW) access (am developing) for Bioinformatics — hands-on as well as for teaching (Powerpoint)
Using the system for post-lecture and practical back up materials and exercises for enhancing student learning
    Teaching resources
Lecture notes with incorporated video clips
Interactive modeling of a simple nature
    Student management
    Learning resources
    Lecture note access

  4. I am concerned about:

    Dealing with increasing E-Mail correspondence
Converting my current teaching materials to a system-friendly form
Copyright on diagrams I use as overheads
    Increased student dependence on spoon-feeding!
Time for development and testing as well as carrying out other ‘duties’ — research/safety/admin
In the short term finding time to implement the system
Speed, IT service support, University admin support
Amount of time needed for lecturers to develop material
Amount of work required to load teaching materials onto the network (i.e. put them in Web format)
    Students being spoon fed

  5. Needs particular to my department / school not yet covered

Attendance monitoring — generate automatic reminders
My Department in History. This system could be very useful to such a Department in a number of ways — at present we have no more than a simple database for student management

  6. What more would a C&IT based NLE need, for it to play a valuable role in enhancing the quality of academic support and guidance for your students and / or in enhancing their personal and academic development?

Seems like a very useful resource to have available at Durham
    Good support staff
Dedicated staff experienced in ‘creating’ these courses on-line from raw info
I could only really answer this question in the light of experience gained in using the system you have demonstrated
    Incorporation of more CAL materials??
    Abolition of copyright laws!!!
